Behind the Shot

Seal Tite Lining Systems

Independence Kansas | Photography

Manufacturing is BIG and I shoot a lot of it. But, what was unique about this shoot was the woman operating the machinery. It was the first time I'd ever come across this in all the warehouses I’ve been in. So of course I had to capture an image.

About the shot:

I used two Canon Speedlites to create this photo. I love those little guys. You can tuck them anywhere and they pack a punch for the size.

In a shot like this, I look for a color that sticks out. Like the woman’s green jacket. With that in mind, I try and find either a complementary tone OR I color match with gels. Also to note, the companies brand color was also that teal color.

You can see my strobe in the lower right-hand corner bouncing off some light-colored metal on the machine in order to get a soft light on her face. In the upper left-hand side of the image you can see my gelled strobe shooting through the parts. Also to note is the ambient lights in the room. We had to stop that down with our camera because it wasn’t flattering at all.

Changing the camera perspective we’re now getting a shadow cast on our subject which provides a really cool texture or depth to the image that we didn’t have on the other side.

The downside to running through warehouses is that I’m there to create as much content for my clients as possible which doesn’t always lend itself to hanging out on one image too long. All in all, I was on this shot for about 10 minutes and we had to move on to something else.
